“Rooms for Hope”

Everyday Refugees Foundation and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation Grant

 “Rooms for Hope”

After several months of detailed planning and preparation, “Rooms for Hope” just arrived to Jordan, providing Syrian refugees with an organized creative play area and nursery in their camp.

We
officially opened “Rooms for Hope” on October 23 in the Azraq refugee camp in Jordan. Located around 100km east of its capital Amman, around 41,000 Syrian refugee mothers, fathers, and children reside in the camp. About 61% are children under the age of 18, and more than 7,000 are under the age of five. This project is dedicated to the youth in the camp who yearn for, and are in need of, safe spaces to play and interact with one another.

In the beige, dusty landscape of the Azraq refugee camp there are now two colorful “Rooms for Hope” caravans with beautifully painted scenes of trees, rainbows, and playgrounds adorning the exterior. One caravan serves as a nursery and the other as a children’s play area.

The caravans are fully equipped with all the essentials, such as a bassinet in the nursery, age-appropriate toys, and a ball pit. The play area caravan features colorful tables and chairs sized for young children along with yellow beanbags for seating, colorful wall art, and many toys. There are board games and puzzles to stimulate their minds as well as notebooks and colored pencils to inspire them to practice writing or create art.
Both “Rooms for Hope” are also equipped with air conditioning and wash rooms. Outside the caravans is a covered playground that includes a swing set, slide, and two small playhouses.

For the inauguration we decorated the space with balloons before welcoming dozens of children aged five to seven, and their parents, to a fun filled day of surprise activities. The faces of both children and parents were full of anticipation as they waited to see the “Rooms for Hope”.
As soon as we opened the door the children eagerly ran inside, hardly able to contain their excitement as they saw their new space.

Ibtisam, age 6, jumped up and down as she noticed all the toys in the room. “I’m so happy. I want to play with everything”, she said.

“It is a really great project. We need this in our camp to give the children a place to be themselves without stress”, said Asia Al-Abadi, a 32-year-old mother from Raqqa, Syria, the mother of 6-year-old Ibtisam.

During the festive event the children played and spent time drawing while enjoying sweets, juice, and a bag of gifts that included a toy electronic educational tablet. A DJ played uplifting music as everyone sang together! The children also joined in dancing with a traditional Syrian dabke band (Arabic Folk Dance), whose members are from their own camp’s refugee community. Seeing the joy of both children and parents was priceless.

“Our children need fun spaces like this” said Zahra Al-Taher, a 29-year-old Syrian refugee mother from Aleppo, the mother of 5-year-old Khalid.

The caravans not only provide a safe area for kids to play and for parents to take care of their little ones, but they also offer a place for parents, especially mothers, to socialize. It’s a way for them to connect and support each other through shared experiences, while also teaching and playing with their children.

In addition to helping the children in this crucial phase of their development by providing play and safety, the caravans also serve the community of the camp as a whole. Children will interact more with their peers, meet other people, and learn social skills that they will help them beyond the caravans.

Ensuring a safe and healthy environment for the youth is a pillar of our foundation and our endeavors are a long-term commitment. “Rooms for Hope”, our project in Azraq refugee camp in Jordan in collaboration with the Princess Alia Foundation, is the latest iteration of our “Room for Hope” project that we began in 2022, providing a safe space for Ukrainian refugee children at a shelter in the Romanian capital. Our current goal is to commit, for at least a year, to ensuring that the caravans are running smoothly by supporting the staff and maintenance of the caravans as well providing educational materials.

World Refugee Day 2024

Every year on June 20 the international community observes World Refugee Day to honor the strength and perseverance of refugees everywhere, highlighting their hopes and dreams and their rights to a safe, better life.

Education is one of the fundamental human rights and significantly impacts children’s health, well-being, and prospects for the future. But for many refugees, access to education is one of their biggest challenges. For these children, this disruption to education is a setback to learning and gaining skills that will improve their lives.

At Everyday Refugees Foundation education is a pillar of our mission. Over the last four years, we have been sponsoring a school for Afghan refugee children on the outskirts of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, where four teachers work hard to inspire and teach now 226 young students. Among them, Saima, a 7-year-old Afghan refugee girl, Lobaba, a 6-year-old Afghan refugee girl and Nadia, an 8-year-old Afghan refugee girl along with another 134 girls and 90 boys, ranging in age from 4 to 13, eager to learn and work towards a brighter future.

To help the children reach their goals our team has been providing equipment, uniforms, school supplies, and an annual curriculum that includes math, English, and Urdu lessons. Our long-term project “Encourage” aims to continue offering refugee children the opportunity to gain an education in a safe and supportive environment and a chance to build a better future.

Encourage School

Four years ago, Everyday Refugees Foundation launched several projects in Pakistan in support of girls’ education, with the goal to empower and ensure a better future for Afghan refugee girls and boys with many possibilities.

With our project “Education is the Key” our team equipped several makeshift schools on the outskirts of Islamabad, and provided the children with school kits, curriculums and all the necessary items the students need for the full school year. With that we ensured hundreds of Afghan refugee girls and boys have their basic right to education.

Since the end of 2021, up to date, the Foundation has been fully sponsoring and equipping a school for Afghan refugee children on the outskirts of the Pakistani capital.

Now, with our long-term project “Encourage”, more than 280 girls and boys are receiving their right to education.

In May we welcomed new students to “Encourage”.

Education is a pillar of the Everyday Refugees Foundation’s mission. Education is the key to ensuring a better future full of possibilities for each child.

“Bearing Witness” in Amsterdam

VOICES, MESSAGES AND TESTIMONIES

Following a very successful opening and display in Athens, Greece, “Bearing Witness” photo exhibition travels to Amsterdam for the first time.

Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winner Muhammed Muheisen and Howard G. Buffett, chairman and CEO of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, sign the photo exhibition “Bearing Witness,” a photographic mosaic of untold stories from around the world.

“Bearing Witness” is a selection of images spanning three decades and 30 countries. A visual journey of moments in time that show life amidst chaos, destruction, human suffering and the resilience of those caught in the middle. Even in the midst of conflict, life never stops but keeps going. Life goes on.

The exhibition is a documentation of important events that took place and are recorded in history through the lens of the two photojournalists Howard G. Buffett and Muhammed Muheisen.

The photo exhibition “Bearing Witness” takes place at the Posthoornkerk, Haarlemmerstraat 124-126 in Amsterdam daily from 11:00am – 19:00pm from the 9th until the 20th of March 2024 with free entrance.

“Bearing Witness” Photo Exhibition

A collection of unique pictures was for the first time displayed in the Greek capital. Muhammed Muheisen, a two – time Pulitzer Prize winner and Howard G. Buffett, Chairman and CEO of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, sign the photo exhibition “Bearing Witness”, a photographic mosaic of untold stories from around the world.

“Bearing Witness” is a selection of images that spans over three decades from 30 countries. A visual journey of moments in time that shows life amid chaos, the destruction, the human misery, and the resilience of those who got caught in the middle of it. Even in the middle of the conflict, life never stops but keeps going. Life goes on.

The exhibition is a documentation of major events that took place and were recorded in history through the lens of the two photojournalists Howard G. Buffett and Muhammed Muheisen.

“Bearing Witness” spreads awareness and pursues changing stereotypes and raise the voice of the people being photographed. These are never just pictures, these are voices, these are messages, and these are testimonies that live forever.

“Behind my photographs there are people, who were forced to leave their homes and hopes, their families and memories behind and go search for a new, safe home. As nobody leaves their home unless they are forced to leave their homes”, said Muhammed Muheisen.

“At times, I find myself uncomfortable by the tragedies I’ve seen and photographed. When I am behind my lens, I remind myself of the importance of documenting what I am witnessing, and that those images can change hearts and minds. This is my emotional coping mechanism in real time”, said Howard G. Buffett.

The photo exhibition “Bearing Witness” took place at the historic building of Athens Conservatoire (Odeio Athinon), Polychoros Ω2, until the 22nd of December 2023.

Fun, Joy and Happiness

On World Refugee Day and any other day, let us all remember that behind the word ‘refugee’ there are children. Let us all remember that children are the real victims of conflict.

Children don’t get to choose where they are born or the circumstances surrounding them, children all over the world share the same things in common, they seek fun, they seek joy and they seek happiness- no matter where they are from.

World Refugee Day is marked annually on June 20 to raise awareness of the plight of refugees globally.

Happy Eid al-Fitr

Today is the first day of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr. The holiday  marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar during which devotees fast from dawn until dusk.

On this occasion, our team travelled on Thursday April 20, to a tented settlement on the outskirts of the Jordanian city of Mafraq, near the Syrian border, where hundreds of Syrian refugee families are taking shelter.

To share the holiday with the women, men, and children, we distributed a hundred and fifty packages that contain traditional oriental sweets from Aghati Sweets to the residents of the settlement to celebrate with them the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Wishing a happy Eid al-Fitr to everyone celebrating.

Dreams Come True

He has a dream, just like any other child in the world. Dreams can come true, if you work hard, follow your heart and believe in yourself.

Early in March as Myron Nehoda just turned 9-year-old, he put on his red football uniform and headed to a near by park to practice, just like a pro.

Myron, the young Ukrainian refugee boy from Mykolaiv was forced to flee his home on the 3rd of November along with his 33-year-old mother Oleksandra Baraban and his brothers Stanislav and Hnat following a shelling close to their home. Fearing for their lives they fled to neighboring Romania taking refuge in a shelter in Bucharest where they reside up-to-date.

In the middle of November, while we were launching our campaign “Together We Can” to help and empower Ukrainian refugees in Romania, our team laid eyes for the first time on Myron, he was enjoying playing football with his brothers at the shelter’s back yard. His talent, passion and determination couldn’t go unnoticed. We had to do something about it and this is when we made sure to enroll him at the local football club FC Dinamo Bucharesti where he is currently pursuing his dream to become a professional footballer.
